A Snap in the Neighborhood: Mid-City

To begin our social media spotlight, ‘A Snap in the Neighborhood,’ our first stop was Mid-City! It is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in New Orleans and many of its residents have pledged eternal allegiance to this artsy, historic, and continuously growing part of town. Mid-City may be right in the middle of everything, but it has a spirit and joy all its own. As this neighborhood continues to see new business flourish on its streets, it’s obvious why people flock to fill every shotgun double they can find. 

Two of New Orleans biggest streets run through Mid-City; Canal Street leading downtown to the French Quarter, and Carrollton Avenue running from the Riverbend to City Park. Over 170 years old, one mile wide, and three miles long comprising a total of 1,300 acres, City Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country. It’s also home to New Orleans Museum of Art and the largest collection of mature live oaks in the WORLD. Between the large menu of recreational activities and its majestic natural beauty, City Park has a special place in the heart of generations of New Orleanians.

While in Mid-City, it’s hard to ignore the crown jewel of Bayou St. John. This narrow waterway is navigated today by kayaks and canoes, and many festivals and celebrations take place on its shore. This access and drainage to the lake contributed to the neighborhoods settlement in the beginning of New Orleans, and many significant people have occupied the neighborhoods historic homes throughout the years. The small Bayou St. John community has fought valiantly to preserve the historic homes along the bayou. Its residents have also campaigned for bayou clean ups after events and focused the city’s attention to ensuring this beloved bayou and its wildlife are here for future generations to admire.

Our  favorites may convince you to start spending all of your weekends in Midcity.
